The Word of God, (the Holy Bible) tells us how to pray effectively.
In James 5:16b we are given these truths by God. "The effectual fervant prayer of a righteous man availeth much." Also we read in Isaiah more instruction from God about prayer. Isaiah 59:2 "But your iniquities, (thoughts of the heart) have separated between you and your God and your sin have hid His face from you that He will not hear."
Therefore, we must then be righteous and cleansed from all sin in order to have God hear our prayers.

The Word of God tells us how to be righteous and holy before God.
In Romans 3:23 we read, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." In Romans 3:20 we read, "There is none righteous, no, not one." Again in Romans 5:8 we see the answer to our sin, "But God commendeth His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us." In Ephesians 2:8&9, "For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast."

We then can see that Jesus is the answer to our sin problem and that our sin will keep our prayers from being effective. Again we read in Romans 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

So we see the need to go to God through Jesus Christ, in order that we have a way to be forgiven of our sins. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me." 1John 1:9 declares, "If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

We see Jesus will forgive us if we repent (turn away) from our sins with all of our heart, trusting Him alone as our Savior!

Jesus said, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and sup (dine, live with) with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in my throne, even as I also overcame and am set down with my Father in His throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches." Revelation 3:20-22

Therefore, we see the first prayer we must pray to God is a prayer of repentance, totally surrendering our lives, wills, bodies, minds and spirits unto God. We must acknowledge our sin, turn from it in our hearts and trust Jesus to bring us to eternal life.

Roman 10:9-10 says - "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
